More About The Bluebird…

The eastern bluebird is a small songbird that is native to North America and spends much of the year in Missouri. It is a member of the thrush family and is named for its bright blue coloration around the head and wings.

The eastern bluebird has a dark brown back, white undersides, an orange throat and breast, and a black streak on its sides. Its wingspan ranges from 7-9 inches, and it typically weighs just under a pound.

It feeds primarily on insects, but will also eat fruits and berries. They typically live in open woodland or scrubland habitats with some grassy areas, such as abandoned fields or old pastures.

Eastern bluebirds are monogamous and nest in tree cavities or man-made nesting boxes during the spring months of April through July. They are very territorial of their nests, often chasing away other birds who approach too closely.

Eastern bluebirds migrate south for the winter months to more temperate climates before returning to Missouri in the springtime.
