Unraveling Mardi Gras: A Tradition with Deep Roots

Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday,” traces its origins to ancient Roman festivals celebrating fertility and spring. Today, it’s a pre-Lenten celebration, and St. Louis has carved its own niche in this festive tradition.

While some claim Soulard’s Mardi Gras to be the second-largest in the country, the president of the Mardi Gras Foundation clarifies that the true size remains unknown. Regardless, St. Louis Mardi Gras stands as a major contender, attracting hundreds of thousands with its vibrant festivities.

The Birth of Soulard Mardi Gras: From Humble Beginning

Soulard Mardi Gras began in 1979 when five adventurous individuals decided to instill some warmth and celebration into the dreary St. Louis winters. From a modest start with a $1,250 budget, the celebration has evolved into a month-long extravaganza attended by around 750,000 people.

The Grand Parade, a highlight of the celebration, started with a small group marching through the streets and has grown into a colossal event. Today, it boasts an economic impact exceeding $21 million and stands as the “unofficial” second-largest Mardi Gras street party in the U.S.
