During the Civil War, Cape Girardeau was occupied by the Union Forces. For a brief period in 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant set up a headquarters for the Union army in Cape Girardeau before later moving it north to Cairo, Illinois.

The original structure was destroyed by a tornado in the mid-1800s but a group of volunteers were able to construct this replica in 2003.

In the early 19th Century, the “Red House” was the best-known trading post between St. Louis, MO, and Memphis, TN. In November of 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stopped to visit with Lorimier’s family and purchase supplies for the expedition ahead. 

Visitors can view 19th-century merchandise in Lorimier’s Trading Post or visit the Lorimier Room to see how a home of this period may have been looked. In the Girardeau Room, a large map of the territory under the control of Don Louis Lorimier for the Spanish Government is on display.

Today, the Red House Interpretive Center is maintained by the City of Cape Girardeau and is open to visitors from May to October. Admission is free. Guided group tours are available on weekdays by appointment only

Cape Girardeau has a park that has special significance to many. We were able to venture southeast of town to the Trail of Tears State Park. Named in remembrance of the tragic forced removal of Native American tribes in the 1830s. This park offers hiking trails, a lake, and interpretive displays that shed light on this somber chapter in American history.

Tribes that had made a home in this region for many generations were forced to leave the land and migrate to the West. We were satisfied to see a place devoted to educating our younger generations about what happened not that long ago. The park is a place of reflection and natural beauty, making it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

7. Rock ‘N’ Roll Drive-In

Established in 2020 after families had been locked down from the pandemic, some local friends decided to bring life back to an old drive-in theater in Blomeyer, MO. just a few minutes southwest of Cape Girardeau. Rock ‘N’ Roll Drive-In was born and this family-focused site now hosts classic movies and new releases as well as live music concerts. 

One of the owners is the lighting and set designer for the rock band Lynard Skynard. He also works with acts such as Def Leopard and Paul McCartney. You can see why people really get excited to see a concert at this resurrected drive-in venue.

8. My Daddy’s Cheesecake Bakery and Cafe

My Daddy’s Cheesecake Bakery and Cafe serves up delectable cheesecakes and savory dishes. The cafe began when the daughter of a local professor was waiting tables nearby. Her daddy made some cheesecakes to sell in the restaurant and she would kindly ask her patrons if they would like to try “my daddy’s cheesecake?” and the line stuck. It sparked the creation of an entire bakery dedicated to his creations.

With homemade cheesecakes, decadent desserts, a cozy cafe ambiance, savory options, catering services, and a nationwide mail-order service, you’ll find something that will satisfy all flavor palettes. 9. Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center

This terrific site indeed showcases the diverse natural resources of southeastern Missouri along with its rich cultural history. You can explore their two miles of nature trails that wind through the hills, ravines, past sinkholes, and deep hollows. Children, of course, will love the playground areas, aquariums, and hands-on exhibits set up around the center.

The main building is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The park grounds are open every day except for Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

10. Missouri Wall of Fame / Riverfront Park

The Missouri Wall of Fame is a series of murals painted on the backside of the Riverfront Park’s flood wall. This park is the docking site for the paddle boats that cruise the Mississippi River and features a riverfront walk/bike trail.  

Riverfront Park is located on the river side of the flood wall and is not accessible during high water.  While you’re there, make your way to the other side of the flood wall which displays beautifully done paintings designed to both educate viewers about Missouri history and serve as inspiring artwork.
